pro-democracy lawmakers resigned on

Wednesday, in solidarity with four colleagues
removed by China under a new resolution that
allows thenm to dismiss politicians they deem a
national security threat.
It means for the first time since Hong Kong
was handed back to China by the UK in 1997
there will be almost no dissenting voices.
Hong Kong Democratic Party chairman Wu
Chi-wai said this had signified the "death" of
the "one country, two systems" agreement that
allowed Hong Kong to retain more rights and
freedoms than mainland China.
It follows a tense summer of pro-democracy
protests over a controversial national
security law introduced by China in June that
criminalised "subversion". It has already led
to several arrests of activists and has largely
silenced demonstrators.
